Not So Inconvenient!!!

Last Wednesday we showed “An Inconvenient Truth” at our Church.  It was supplied by Interfaith Power and Light and it was shown in many churches over the last month.  The film is powerful presentation of the facts in a way that makes them hearable.  Many congregations have had good attendance—20-40 people and we initially set up 30 chairs, but we had not counted on the wonderful publicity headed by Lisa Mosher!  We set up more chairs, then more and yet more until every chair was set up and full!  Mahar gave extra credit to students who attended and the final count passed 100!!

Hopefully, many of those attending will change their use of energy and work toward reduced carbon emissions and hopefully all of us will continue to spread the word.  Global Warming, more than terrorism, more than the economy, more than perhaps any other factor will effect our lives and those of our children.

We plan to have a series of films, hopefully one each month dealing with important issues.  If you know of a good film, let us know.  When you hear that we are showing one, spread the word and attend yourself!

Just Passing Through

As I started writing this, I happened upon a ministerial search packet from 1993. In this notebook are pictures of folk I am just beginning to know and love.  Many are still around; some are gone for good; others are on, shall we say,  sabbatical.  But these faces, and more are the face of our faith.  They speak of care for all and the equality that our covenantal faith demands.  Some in the 1993 picture are the same ones in church leadership today.  What makes it all worth while?  Sometimes it seems that it takes all the running you can do to stay in one place.

There is another picture in the office among the piles of mail.  It came from another faith tradition.  I do not have to even read the articles of faith on the back to be happy that Unitarian Universalism exists.  The picture says it all.  There is a smiling, very white Jesus surrounded by four children.  A blonde child stands behind him, his

head even with the master’s and his hands on his right shoulder.  His demeanor is one of having knowledge beyond his years.  A girl stands beside the boy on Jesus’ right, her head a little lower, but with the same look of wisdom.  Another girl is on Jesus’ left and looks adoringly at him.  The fourth child is in front of Jesus, his head significantly below the others.  He looks adoringly up at him and “coincidentally” the blonde boy.  Weak and subservient, his is the only dark skin in the picture.  While everyone is all smiles in this picture, it is in fact an illustration of an oppressive class and social structure, camouflaged in pastel tones and biblical robes.

Based on love and right relationship we Universalists and Unitarians have for centuries painted a different picture of the kingdom of heaven.  I see it in the 1993 search packet.  I see it in the faces at First Universalist Church every day that I am here.

Building Needs Reviewed

All of us know that our building needs work, but what does it need?  Over the past few years we have been doing little projects but seemed almost afraid to look at the big picture.  Will fixing our windows and the parlor floor be the end of the problems or is there some giant problem just waiting to show itself.

Well, we are finally doing something to clarify what the needs are.  We have had several “preservation architects” look over the building and within the next few weeks they will report back to the board with proposals.  Hopefully they will be able to give us a clear picture of what problems we are facing and at least a ballpark estimate of the cost as well as at least pointing us in the direction of finding help with the funding of the repairs.  We’ll keep you posted!
